Manuscript Consultation
Vanessa Blakeslee provides thorough, constructive feedback on works of fiction and nonfiction and guidance to aspiring and accomplished writers at all stages of their development. Her work with manuscripts begins with a close, respectful reading, during which she annotates the pages to provide careful line-editing when necessary, as well as to highlight broader issues—thematic, structural, technical, stylistic, and character-related. She then composes a detailed letter to the author, brainstorming about the work and its possibilities, offering observations, reflections and concrete suggestions for revision. The goal is always to help bring each original manuscript to its fullest realization, while supporting the artistic growth and literary ambitions of the individual writer.
Vanessa encourages clients to fulfill the potential of a given project through thoughtful rewriting, and invite submissions of revised manuscripts for follow-up consultation. She also offers feedback on successive projects for clients who desire an ongoing editorial relationship.
Fees and payment:
All work is performed at the rate of $75 per hour. Based on the particulars of your project and Vanessa's experience of per-page averages, she will provide an estimate for your consultation. An advance payment, equaling half the estimated fee, will be expected with your submission. Upon return of with your manuscript and feedback, the balance of the fee is due on receipt.
Manuscript Guidelines:
Manuscripts must be double-spaced with at least 1-inch margins and minimum 12-point type. They are generally submitted via e-mail, although arrangements can be made for a hard copy consultation.
Arranging a Consultation
Please send a brief description of your project, writing background, and desired date of submission by e-mail (go to Contact page) Vanessa will accommodate your timetable based on your needs and her respective availabilities. Please note: the minimum booking for any manuscript consultation or editorial service is a Level One consultation (3 hours).
Turn-around Time: Vanessa will mail back each submission within one week of scheduled receipt, unless otherwise specified.

After you have reviewed the response to your work, Vanessa is available for a brief exchange, either by e-mail or telephone.
